well, the idea that i am a person, human. that assumption is already made clear. dogs see characteristic's of their owner and reflect it on to the others they see, so in retrospect the owner makes the dog =) psychology.

As a 'trainer' this is difficult much of the time as a paying client won't want to stop due to filming considerations and so on. I can film myself with my own trained dogs with relative ease (tripods etc.) Getting someone to film me working never seems to be that easy! Unless you're offering!? :)

Yeahhh I keep hearing that she'll "calm down" in a few months - I went out and bought a nylon harness and she seems to have calmed down with it on - I would love to teach her to heel but it is so hard to get the attention!! I wonder if there's an age when these things begin to work? ie maybe it's too much to expect a pup to walk to heel all the time in the street? I'm hoping if I keep doing 'heel' for a couple of yards in between the mad dashing and stubborn sitting, the pup will get the habit eventually. I do 'heel' with treat in hand and he has to follow the hand.

Does this work? I have a 5 month old Staffy/Collie/GSD cross who's tiny, but pulls like mad. I tried the stop/walk training, that didn't work. Then I tried the walk a bit/give a treat one, that didn't work either. I'm tearing my hair out.

IT WORKED! My 13 mo rottweiler was a rescue dog & didn't have any training. Pulled constantly. In < 5 min, she followed me instead of pulling me. When there was a distraction, I quickly turned & walked away. She "snapped" herself quite a few times but she stopped pulling. If I shorten the leash, she stays close; if I let it out, she may go to the end but will not pull. Wish I had it on video to show it works for big, untrained dogs!

well like any animal you have got to show your dog, your alpha. people take that lightly but its true. when every my dog does something i dont like i stomp my foot and look at him. this techqiue he's teaching works, with bigger dogs especially. my dog will not let anyone NEXT TO ME AT ALL only if i introduce him to them first. sheperds are big and loyal animals, they look at you like your family.

i love watching your instructional videos. i find them both informative and highly satisfying knowing i can train my dog without paying an arm and a leg for a stranger to do it. i noticed in all your videos you work with dogs that are already trained in the command. i would like to see you work with dogs that aren't trained for that specific command so we can view a typical dog reaction and proper correction. thanks again

My Personal favorite of all these collars is the gentle leader head collar or Halti. They are easy to use, the dog doesnt pull and it does not cause discomfort as much as a choke or prong collar does. My dog fought the halti at first but now its a dream!

they do have anti-pull harnesses that would do well for a pug. The harness doesn't hurt the dog, it just makes him uncomfortable to pull. The idea is to get the dog to pay attention to you while walking, if he starts to walk ahead, turn and go in the opposite direction, sooner or later he's going to start looking at you when walking, praise the dog when he does that. Ignore the dog when he gets ahead, just go in the opposite direction and praise when he corrects himself.

I am a fan of the gentle leader collar, and have used it with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier with much success. However, I now have a pug, who we adopted as an adult and has issues with walks that would likely be corrected with the use of the same, unfortunately it's impossible... for obvious reasons... lol Any suggestions on an alternative to the gentle leader that would work with the pugs physiology? We presently walk him with a regular halter.

I use this collar and it really helps my dog to stop pulling. Except my collar is called a Halti, which I think is just a brand from Germany. However, unlike other collars it does seem to bother her wearing it but just as an irriation. She often tries to dive to the ground and rub her face to try and get it off. Also it the part that goes over her nose can push up underneath the eyes if she pulls which can make her squint. What about pinch collars? Are they the same as prong?

Ok.. to people who have a dog who pull, and those who have a dog who doesn't move... If dog doesn't move, bring some snack you know it likes. Nose is the strongest sense of the dog. That should make it move. If the dog pulls, you stop, and make him sit. Start again, if it pulls, stop again. If you get only 10m in 30m, then thats ok. Your dog will learn that pulling does not get him anywhere. That is the point..

are collars a bad thing for a dogs throat? my german shepherd is 6 months old and pulls like a train. that can't be good for his throat, I don't know what to buy a harness or a gentle leader..it's gotta be able to hold onto him well, it can't slip off. For beggin, ignore him completely. If he gets noisy about it, remove him from the room. For the jumping/scratching on doors, you need to be there with him, say "No." in a very firm voice. The INSTANT he comes down/stops the behavior, praise him and treat him. He will soon associate the treat/praise with NOT scratching/jumping. Training a dog is very simple, reward what you WANT, remove good stuff when behaviors aren't wanted.

i have a chihuahua named chloe. she has been pad trained since she was very small and now she is 3 years old. we have a specific area of the house where her pad is and she always uses it even pooping. i work 6 hours a day and i dont have to worry about whether she has to go out to potty. its very convenient. i can take her on vacation and place a pad down and thats where she will go. its great. when outside, she uses the grass or dirt. i love pads!

We used pee pads to train. I never moved it closer to the door though. It's always been in the same spot in our laundry room. The only time I ever really put her in their to go, though, was when it was really cold outside. Chihuahuas hate the cold (good thing I'm in TX lol). Poor Pebbles would just stand their and shakes (doggie sweater or not) last year when it was cold. Now she runs for it, does her business and runs back to the door. ha!

i have a question. When im at home, i keep my 2 dogs with me in the same room all the time. whether its in my room or computer room, etc. they always go outside to pee and poo. while im at work, i put them in the bathroom with the baby gate up. ( i work 10 hrs and live alone) when i come home, theres pee/poo on the floor. I would like to know, how do i get them to wait for me to get home then do their business outside?

@tishampat theres nothing u can do if u didnt catch them in the act of pooping or peeing, . The only way u can do is catch them while there using it and say no or stop and hurry up take them out side and reward them. Dogs live in the moment , they dont think about the past

He said not to punish your dog unless you absolutely have to. which would usually involve a tap on the behind or nose. never punch it or throw it around and NEVER rub its nose in its mess. get a soda can and throw some pennies in it and duck tape it closed and shake it when its in the middle of going potty to let it know that your serious.

It makes total sense. If you punish a dog for not following command, the dog will associate the punishment with the command. However, dogs really don't have the mind of a human, so they can't fully understand. It's all in the training. How you train your dog determines the dogs behavior. Very vague, but you have to be careful and be systematic with the dog. It really depends on the person. Meaning Maturity or maybe more.

I think a Chow Chow is a lil' to big fr a condominium. Dogs easier to keep in APT's, the best are toy breeds like pug, pom, papillion, chihuahua etc..... Dogs that don't require alot of space and can squeeze in and bought in a hotel without letting anyone know... but I live in an apt bt i cn't keep one cuz my apt doesn't allow dogs.... If i were, i'd keep a pom.....But if u want a large breed, newfoundlands and great danes are aceptable cuz they are more or less couch potatoes....
