I found, this too late, i had been doing the pulling and tugging method. Although when started this he kinda had the jist of what was happening. then he would start to pull away. After awhile i even started to run, its such a good feeling having your dog running beside you looking up at you ( can only imagine what he's thinking) Thanx very much for this i feel we still have a long way togo. But we are heading in the right direction now......

Oh my gosh! This worked for my 7mo old GSD puppy. We are only on day two of trying this and she is totally getting it! So much so that when she feelings me drop the slack in the leash before I turn around, she is thinking and stops pulling and looks at me! Thank you for this awesome training technique

@amoramorena if you are scared from your own dog... the dog will notice that and make adventage of it -_- u gotta show whos in charge..... if you respect your dog and give him love and mostly the attention he needs he will respect you back + never kick or use angry body language to your dog because then you will feed him with fear wich involve to agression....(the thing is , people who are scared from there own dogs dont notice they are just making one!)

@lyricjam Might not work with all dogs, but has nothing to do with the dog's size and it doesn't mean that the alternative is jerking your dog around as there are other positive methods that might better suit your dog if this one doesn't. I think it's awful when ppl (and I don't mean you) suggest that "Since the dog is big, you harsh methods", thanks to Cisar Millan this idiocy has fans. Positive reinforcement might take longer, but seems to always get long term results that are sustainable.

It is far better to change direction 90 degrees instead of 180. A dog is easily moved sideways, and it's therefore less harmful.

@Nitah89 The idea is not that the loose leash WILL lead to a correction, it is that anytime the dog walks ahead and can't see the handler, it has no idea what potential action the handler can take. While a competition-type heel (similar to what Sam does) is going to be impractical for long walks, the main idea is for the dog to follow the person. With a healthy balance of reinforcement and correction, any dog can do it. Great video, and good boy Sam!

Make sure you do not talk to the dog while you are working on this. Dogs get excited when you talk and will confuse them. Keep your head high and relaxed and give firm but fair corrections. Once they seem to be getting the hang of it and you are walking with a loose lead, then and only then can you pet the dog for approval or speak and give a good boy compliment.

I had a dog that pulled and through lots of research came across a great way to cure the problem. Start with your dog in sit position, without saying a word and with a loose lead start walking at your normal pace. As soon as the dog decides to run in front just turn around and give the dog a quick/easy correction. You must be confident.

One of the doggies got a really bad cough immediately after hitting the end hard. I took him to the vet, who gave him hydrocodone. He coughed and was afraid of the leash for a week (the dog, not the vet). Glad to say, he got over it, and I got over "correction" as a training method. He's now walking loose-leash better than his buddy.

My dog, Happy is the most friendly dog too. He loves people and love the attention. But for some reason he hates, would growl/or sometime try to bite this old man on my street. I found out that Happy doesn't like people wearing a cap, with a hunchback...and the old man got both of that. Then again..my dog for some reason just doesn't like my aunt and her family. He barks and growls at them...I assume because they own two female dogs. Happy usually doesn't bark or growl at all. Confusing!!

Hello Erick Once you already helped my about my dog rolling over nasty and smelly things, now i got a new problem... Semati (My one year old pitbull female) bited a friend not bad.. but she let her fangs prints in my fiend's foot and 2 o 3 tini blood points. Semati is the most friendly dog, when she is in the back of the truck i can give a ride to strangers and she wont bother... but from the nothing she bited my friend... i was there he did nothing to pist her off...

@slothbear2 What this guy means by "cross association" is causing a superstitious behavior. The dog starts to associate something in their environment with the pinch from the prong or choking from the choke chain. It could be anything. Say you're walking past a couple of trees and your dog pulls really hard and gets pinched. He could associate the pinch with the trees. The area the trees are in. The squirrel that was in the tree. This is what you should be careful of.

how old is she now ? have you tried when youre at home every time she looks at you give her a treat that way you will get her undivided atention all the time if you do it enough, and if she is scared when you go out ..take her out a little at a time and as soon as you go out of your door click and treat click and treat she will get into it after a while. we had a similar problem with our gsd pup when we first got him and thats what worked for us

so so true, i have a doberman puppy and I'm starting to have that problem :/ I've been trying to correct it with treats, when i get her attention back to walking, she gets a treat. of course unless i let her go do whatever she wanted to do. although that seems not be so effective cause even if she knows what the click is and does (I've trained her about 4 commands with the clicker) she seems not to want to stop for the treat :/ plus i cant get her to stop getting scared as i walk her, any tips?

My Personal favorite of all these collars is the gentle leader head collar or Halti. They are easy to use, the dog doesnt pull and it does not cause discomfort as much as a choke or prong collar does. My dog fought the halti at first but now its a dream!

they do have anti-pull harnesses that would do well for a pug. The harness doesn't hurt the dog, it just makes him uncomfortable to pull. The idea is to get the dog to pay attention to you while walking, if he starts to walk ahead, turn and go in the opposite direction, sooner or later he's going to start looking at you when walking, praise the dog when he does that. Ignore the dog when he gets ahead, just go in the opposite direction and praise when he corrects himself.

I am a fan of the gentle leader collar, and have used it with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier with much success. However, I now have a pug, who we adopted as an adult and has issues with walks that would likely be corrected with the use of the same, unfortunately it's impossible... for obvious reasons... lol Any suggestions on an alternative to the gentle leader that would work with the pugs physiology? We presently walk him with a regular halter.

I use this collar and it really helps my dog to stop pulling. Except my collar is called a Halti, which I think is just a brand from Germany. However, unlike other collars it does seem to bother her wearing it but just as an irriation. She often tries to dive to the ground and rub her face to try and get it off. Also it the part that goes over her nose can push up underneath the eyes if she pulls which can make her squint. What about pinch collars? Are they the same as prong?

Ok.. to people who have a dog who pull, and those who have a dog who doesn't move... If dog doesn't move, bring some snack you know it likes. Nose is the strongest sense of the dog. That should make it move. If the dog pulls, you stop, and make him sit. Start again, if it pulls, stop again. If you get only 10m in 30m, then thats ok. Your dog will learn that pulling does not get him anywhere. That is the point..

are collars a bad thing for a dogs throat? my german shepherd is 6 months old and pulls like a train. that can't be good for his throat, I don't know what to buy a harness or a gentle leader..it's gotta be able to hold onto him well, it can't slip off. I tried your tennis ball throwing technique.. my dog only drops the ball if I have another ball now lol..so now I play fetch with 2 balls :S

I have 3 kids, so anytime I yell at them the poor *lil* puppy get scared and pees...how do I stop this?! He is otherwise potty trained very well. Any help would be appreciated!

the bell works my wife and i taught my 3 month old lab to do it in about two weeks to do it on her on . it gets a little aggravating once they learn for about two days because they ring it all the time but just stick with it and every time they ring it make them go out and then they will catch on

I have a 10 week old shih tzu, she is coming along on house breaking, but when I go to take her outside she pees just inside the door? Then wants to go outside to play? I don't know why she does this! Sometimes she lets me know she wants to go outside, and she goes fine? Anyone have any advice? I just can't get her all the way over the leap of the doorway!

Hang a bell on ur door handle low enough so he can hit it. Every time he needs to go, take him to the bell and hit it then take him outside to go. Do this enough so that he learns and does it on his own. Its better than him whining for an hour in my opinion lol

Your advice has been great! I have an 11 week old Golden Retriever who is in crate training and doing well. I know tolet training doesn't happen overnight but how do I now progress and have him indicate to me somehow that he needs to go? Ie. how do I move towards him being fully house trained?

Dude , In his "never push the dog's nose into his mess" episode, the author mentioned that if you do that, the dog thinks you are a crazy man and will never poop in front you .When you are out sight, it is the pee and poop time. my puppy peanut POOPS ON THE WALL! no kidding. it walks sideways dragging his butt along the wall and it sticks there. he then proceeds to EAT IT OFF THE WALL! OMG! he only goes when i'm not looking. so i have resorted to tying his leash to my belt loop so he is never more than 2 feet from me so he'll have to go infront of me. HE HASN'T POOPED IN 2 DAYS! what do i do? HE PEES IN THE CATS LITTER BOX! which is fine he's a chihuahua he can poop there too. but he wont. 4 hours at park still no poop!

Whenever my dog had an accident, I wiped it up with a paper towel, then used a different one to apply a spray that would prevent him from going there again. The I put the paper towel in the backyard. He was housebroken in less than 3 weeks.

i have a chihuahua named chloe. she has been pad trained since she was very small and now she is 3 years old. we have a specific area of the house where her pad is and she always uses it even pooping. i work 6 hours a day and i dont have to worry about whether she has to go out to potty. its very convenient. i can take her on vacation and place a pad down and thats where she will go. its great. when outside, she uses the grass or dirt. i love pads!

We used pee pads to train. I never moved it closer to the door though. It's always been in the same spot in our laundry room. The only time I ever really put her in their to go, though, was when it was really cold outside. Chihuahuas hate the cold (good thing I'm in TX lol). Poor Pebbles would just stand their and shakes (doggie sweater or not) last year when it was cold. Now she runs for it, does her business and runs back to the door. ha!

i have a question. When im at home, i keep my 2 dogs with me in the same room all the time. whether its in my room or computer room, etc. they always go outside to pee and poo. while im at work, i put them in the bathroom with the baby gate up. ( i work 10 hrs and live alone) when i come home, theres pee/poo on the floor. I would like to know, how do i get them to wait for me to get home then do their business outside?
