Hey man love your videos. I'm having a real hard time trying to teach my puppy to walk on leash. I use her favorite treats that she goes crazy for on a regular basis, but as soon as I put on the leash and collar I get zero response. Hello, Is it really so big of a problem if the dog barks? I mean it's theire nature to bark at many reasons. Example 1) Some animal/human stepped into theire territorium. 2) stress/aggresive/feeling alone. I mean it's not of a big deal to have my dog bark whenever it feels like it, of course i go check everytime he barks (usually) to see whats the problem. Dogs are packt? I dont know the excaxt word but packtanimals, so yeah :-) Just my opinion.

@badabingrockford It amazes me that compulsion trainers have no idea what they are saying! Instead of thinking what YOU think your dog SHOULD want think about what you can do to actually help your dog LEARN to do something DIFFERENT for the thing HE WANTS. That is what Educated Trainers are doing, they also study the recent science and learn what actually works without traumatizing further an aggressive dog. Aggression does not treat Aggression. Learned from 35 yrs of training and learning.

super video showing desensitization. It's also great to hear the explanation of "over threshold" while showing what that means. When you can control the stimulus this kind of training is quite easy and relatively quick as long as you watch for this exact thing. It a great example of how this works for so manner reactive causes. So much more effective than yelling, rolling, leash popping, all the rest of old methods, that suppress behaviors instead of actually changing the root emotion involved.

Those are some wonderful tips for not barking. But how would I teach my dog (maltese) which goes on bike rides with me (He is tethered to my bike with a bike leash) and he always barks at people walking by or when he encounters other dogs that are walking. He is annoying when he barks. Hope that you can help me with this.

I watch your videos ALL the time. I just got a little long coat Chihuahua and he's slowly learning new tricks. He's 3.5 months old and I watched your videos to learn clicker training and to teach him all he knows... he can sit, lay down, paw, high five, spin, roll over, and touch fingers. awww! they are so awesome! and I agree, my two tiddlers are showing my BCs a thing or two too! :D would like to add not only can little dogs can do all that big dogs can do but old dogs can also learn at just as fast a pace as young ones so no excuse for anyone not to reach for a clicker :)

wow great video! my beagle does not pee or poo in the house anymore. we take him out 2 times a day and he does his business there. ever since we moved to another country we couldnt find any toilet mat for him to pee on so we took him out 2 times and ever since he has learned that when he goes outside he does his business. btw is it harder to house-train a rescue that is at least 2 years old? i'm planning to adopt one and she said that the dog isnt house trained yet.

@Dalmatianlovergirl84 - 1- you can put one baby gate on top of the other if your desperate (the kind that expand) 2- yes the clenser works on tile 3- try using a square of grass sod in a litter box- so the dog doesnt learn to go on anything resembling paper etc 4 Dogs learn at different speeds- let your dog out frequently with a goal for zero mistakes

This is a video of me working on some ideas for a double dog routine with Splash and Tug. Splash is 2 years old and Tug is about 9-10 months. I have had Tug for 5 months now, and he is simply brilliant, and really shows how only using Positive reinforcement really WORKS! :) I do not use any form of positive punishment with my dogs. Meaning they can never get anything wrong...

The beginning of the video shows splash learning to sidestep out in front of me without looking back, this is our newest trick. Kiko learns how to shake a blanket. Later I am just doing some play training with Tug. And at the very end, Splash decides to do the limbo under a stream of water... Splash makes me laugh everyday... :)

I want to see you train a sighthound, malamute, or chow, people shouldn't be impressed with trainers that have border collies, they're so smart they will train humans if need be. try training something that could care less about food or the task still using positive methods, THEN you've truly learned how to modify animal behavior.

i like the shirt you have on in this video, some one a while back was telling me about using shock collars to get dogs to stop barking, my thought was i dont want my dog to stop barking there is a reason why my dog barks at certain times, ex. strangers at door. i would never use a shock collar on my dog, for any reason what so ever i think they are cruel, and i am glad that you feel the same way.

This was a lovely video =) I loved the sidestep, that was amazing! I taught my Border Collie, Shyloh, 3 different tricks today. She is an amazingly fast learner. I love Border Collies, and Splash is definitely a beautiful BC. I love Blue Merles. The positions while facing forward was amazing!

I was going to write a long post about how amazing your videos are, but now I have more questions! My boyfriend and I recently adopted a very poorly bred (and severely neglected) Siberian Husky. We're assuming he had distemper when he was a puppy since all of the enamel on his teeth is gone. (There are other signs he had it as well.) I love your channel. I was told too that you can't train dogs, especially reactive dogs, using only positive reinforcement. I have two border collies, one that is in the process of crossing over with me from using a choke chain and a clicker, and the other who I got as a puppy and have done pretty much all positive reinforcement (still trying to break the habit of using verbal corrections!). I'm training my younger one to be my service dog and I'm always referring to your videos. :)

Hi Emely, I'm wondering if you have any video on how to stop your dog from chasing bicycles. My puppy is a 5 month old border collie, and I have been using clicker training since I got her at 9 weeks. When she sees a bike, she becomes fearful aggressive and lunges towards it. It doesn't react to treats or anything. I can make her sit and stay in front of another dog without approaching it but I need some help with the bike stuff. I'll really appreciate your help. Emily we REALLY appreciate your videos. We just adopted a rescue dog less than 2months ago and without your videos we wouldn't be where we are now with her. You can check out our youtube video of Mya and some of what we have taught her so far. how long should you allow your dog to sniff at the spot? I have a basset hound who normally walk on loose leash ok. But, on a certain spot (usually on wet grassy lawn), he gets really excited, sniff, sleep on it, and refused to move at all. What would be the best way to deal with this behavior?

@kikopup I tend to agree with you :)! Thanks for such a informative reply. I must say its really great seeing someone actually Training with a harness. Rather than just saying "Here is a anti-pull super harness that will magically stop your dog pulling!". You're right that a dog will pull through fire, I've seen dogs half choking themselves on check chains :(. Quick question, if you where to just clip the lead onto your dogs flat collars (say in a emergency), would they still loose lead walk?

p.s. (you can see what harness I use in my leash walking equipment vid) but for dogs that are super pullers I will put a sensation harness on so that when I back up the dog turns towards me (without me getting blisters). There is no such thing as an anti pull harness- dogs can learn to pull against anything (gentle leaders, nails in their necks, a noose lead) I really hate gentle leaders for that, as people just let their dog pull into them and hurt their face rather than TRAINING their dog!

@ninjakittyinmypants There are times in training a shelter dog or a dog new to training where they WILL hit the end of the lead, and all that pressure goes onto one tiny part of the dogs trachea and spine. I do not attach leads to collars for health reasons, as well as if they hit the end of the leash hard it is like a correction or using +P (which I don't use). I do train dogs on collars for 'sports' like rally or passing a CGC test, but I wish those sports would change their rules.

I like the video and the Beautiful dogs :). The only thing I would prefer is training the dogs on a simple flat collar rather than the harness. When you're training with the clicker why would you also use a "anti pull" harness, which in itself is a management tool. It seems very unnecessary. If you train you dog to walk properly on a lead it shouldn't matter what style of collar or harness you have on.

@ashtoncole1 You could also try desensitising her to the clicker. Get someone at a distance to click, and her not be afraid. Then slowly bring her closer to it. Also, try to muffle the sound a lot using thumbtack ro tape or hiding it in cloth or your hand

@haylz27 I've had the same problem w/ my dog. I have stairs right by the front door so every time I want 2 put the leash on I have her go on a step & sit. I make sure she is quiet when I'm putting the leash on, & if she starts barking, I take the leash off & ignore her. Then when she is quiet again, I start over. Once I successfully get the leash on I release her from the step & start walking toward the front door. She only gets to go outside if she is quiet. Hope this helps! -Cori

@ashtoncole1 you could try using a marker word instead of a clicker. like saying "yes!" in a high-pitched, happy voice. just something you say every time your dog does something you like and then give them a treat right after, just like you would do with a clicker. and then if you really want to reintroduce the clicker later, you could try putting something over the indent in the metal at first because that will mute the click a little and make it less scary. hope this helps! -Cori

My do is 1 1/2 yrs. old. She is a quick learner, smart & a constant pleaser but terrified of a clicker. I have tried to click, treat, click treat, but she is so scared she hides. I have to hold out my hands to show the clicker is gone, to get her to come back over to me. She isn't afraid of anything else, very social, loves the dog park, and acutally will beg to learn new tricks, but I am not sure how to train her wthout a clicker. Is there anything I can do to get her to not be afraid?

My last dog I never consciously trained - she just did everything I wanted her to anyway - and she used to bounce and jump up into my arms if there was too much action on the ground, or if I just put my arms out to her and said 'hup!'. I decided to stop doing it after DH said it didn't look like I was doing my back any good (she was much bigger than Kiko and Tug) - but I really missed doing it!

Great video I should teach me aunts dog this. She hates being picked up/grabbed. I was wondering about eye contact. I know you explained it once but I'm having problems with my male Doberman, Alex. I got my female to do it no problem but Alex just doesn't want to, he even seems shy almost, like he thinks looking at me is bad. He'll do anything I want him to except the eye contact. @SinisterSkip Thanks! I do try to make sure with dogs that if they are excitable or over aroused the treats and toys go away, the only way to get reinforcement is to be a calm and thinking dog!

@Alyssabball98 sounds risky for a pug, yeh. Some of them can't even rin for a few minutes without getting dangerously out of breath. Probably depends on the individual dog. Don't push it out of its comfort zone for exercise, for that breed it could be a bad idea.

@isdykusii No, but I can tell you it would be easier to get a scent hound to follow scents, a sight hound to follow prey with their eyes, a flushing breed to flush, a terrier to kill the rats in your garage, and a border collie to herd... Can you imagine trying to teach a beagle to herd sheep? All dogs can be trained very easily using +R however some find doing certain things more reinforcing than others.

Hi there! I don't have a dog yet, but one day I will. It will be a poodle, so, what kind of person does that make me? :-) Anyways, just wondering if I was the only person finding the forth dog doing the weaving (at 1:10) a bit funny looking... is it really a dog? Or maybe a small pony? A boar?? Obviously just kidding, but what kind is it???

@nataliawasilewska97 Not every dog trainer has a border collie. In my area, most dog trainers have mutts, terriers or retrievers. That's unless they are really into agility.

in your opinion, does dog breed stops dog to be intelegent if you are training him? im thinking to get husky but as i searched this beed is hardly trained... im confused... is it posible to train husky some of your tricks? or is it imposible?

@kikopup I 100% agree! I have mixes and "harder to train" types and they learn just fine. Its all about the trainer. A great trainer can teach a cat, a goldfish or even a "dumb" afghan ;) I'll have to think about attending this seminar. The Kathy Sdao one in may I registered for was just canceled and I was very disapointed. Thanks for posting this :)
