Ruth, I just want to say Great video! I am returning to spinning after decades away and needed some refreshing on how to best achieve my desired woolens. I don't spin worsted, because I can buy that easier and cheaper, but woolen isn't easy to find these days, and I missed knitting it.

@Caveman0713 ruthmacgregor's suggestion is good. Suggestions from a tool maker: cut your leather and prepunch your holes at 72 per square inch. Cut the wires so that you can bend them into a U shape, push through the prepunched leather and then bend the tips over all at the same height. Each wire will make two points. Glue the back of the entire sheet once you've got all your wires in place, then tack securely to your back boards and add a handle. There's a reason they're $50-$150 a set!

Making a carder -- no modern tools.... Interesting question. How modern is modern? If you mean pre-modern, like 17th century -- you bet! You need wood for the backs and handles, leather for the cloth, and wires for the, um, wires. You cut and bend the wires, insert them in the leather, back to front, then tack the leather to the card back. If you mean pre-modern, as in Neolithic -- well, they didn't have cards! To prepare wool for spinning, just do a super job of teasing. (It works well!)

Wonderful video. By the way, if you can't afford wool cards to start with get two identical pet slickers. They're much smaller so the rolags won't be as big, but they are less expensive. Plus they fit in a small tote bag for on-the-goers. I've used mine for wool, cotton and my flax (until I can get a flax hackle).

Hi Ruth, I have looked for a long time online and in books and have found this method of carding to be very successful, I have never done this myself but am starting to take it up. Do you have any ideas on how I might make a carder? I mean without using modern tools. I have researched this topic but have found nothing. If you have any ideas please share. Ruth, what an excellent teaching video! It almost makes me wish I had cards instead of combs..but I love my mini-combs. I have an old style Louett coarse cardboard carder but what it is good for? When I use it on 'meet sheep'(or Shetland etc) wool it causes multiple neps. I see in your written text carded batts won't work for long-draw spinning. Hi! Some carders have stiffer wires than others, and that affects doffing. First and foremost, make sure you doff in the proper direction. The wires are angled -- seen from the side, on wires like this < < < < , the fibre will doff nicely if pulled to the right, but not to the left. Next, a thicker batt will doff more completely than a thin one (fibres like to stick together). It's normal for wool to nestle down in the wires, but it'll peel right out of there when pulled the right way.

Thanks for that very clear. Nice music. I'm a bit stuck on the doff bit. The fibres are well down the teeth and I have to get them off with a knitting needle. Am I pressing the carders together too hard ?

nice technique, but a beginner doesn't have to spend 400 bucks or more. They can make a drop spindle for nothing and see if it's for them. There are a ton of vids showing how to make one and how to use it. Bet ya have all the bits to make a decent spindle in your house right now.

Most definitely! It's the same as store bought yarn in that aspect. It adds a special touch, though, when you can say that you've carded, dyed and spun the yarn, THEN crocheted it into a lovely hat/scarf/etc.

I was informed that I am using the wrong term for the type of fiber I am using here. This preparation is Carded Top, not Roving. I'll do more research on this subject. Roving is actually a specific preparation of fibers, not specifically a fiber type. Roving is essentially a way to refine the fibers in preparation for spinning, allowing all the staples to be going in the same direction for spinning. This being said, pretty much any fiber can be prepared in a roving; be it wool, alpaca, cotton, hemp fiber, silk, or any other fiber available. Roving is prepared by separating a batt into connected sections, then drafting out slightly to line up the fibers. Neat!

I love Megan's videos because they're clear and fun and very inspiring. I'm not a professional spinner by any means - but I love spinning. Her videos got me started - and whether pre-drafting BFL is wrong or not, for a beginner like me, it opened so many other doors to learning to spin better and experiment with other fibers, thus learning later on which fibers needed pre-drafting or not, or whatever else.

I think what you're missing here is that this video is really just to show the technique. This is just one video in a series of three that shows the most basic of the drop spinning techniques. Also, it's totally possible to make adjustments as you go, but in my lessons I've found that most beginners have an easier time getting an even yarn if they prep their roving. All in all, I really think that it's important for people to know this skill for spinning, whether or not they use it every time.

Well, two things: Since this is a beginning how-to, and not all fiber is prepared as nicely as the BFL, I'm showing the technique of pre-drafting. This technique comes in especially handy when I am spinning mill ends. Secondly, since I'm spinning with a drop spindle, I've got precious little time and essentially one-half less of a hand's attention to be able to spend evenly drafting a larger roving. If I'm looking for consistency with a drop spindle, I've found I'm better off pre-drafting.

There are tons of ways to do this- I use gloves ( see through- I'm a nurse) and after wrapping the wool- put them into the gloves,add water, then I can squeeze it just like i am washing my hands- around and around. Rinse in differing temps to get rid of the excess soap and tighten it up- lots of fun. Some bars of soap lather very little and do not work well, btw

Well, here the base, so to speak is soap and you're using a minimal amount of wool. In the case of making other felted items, you can certainly experiment with using wool scraps (yarn, old sweaters, etc.) as the core and adding wool batting or roving over it. As long as the wool is not superwash it should felt (and be felted to) just fine. -CP

I've never had a problem with it getting moldy. Wool is naturally antibacterial and antimicrobal, so maybe that even helps things. As with any bar soap, it's best to keep it out of standing water in between uses (like on a soap dish that drains).

I would suggest that you try batting rather than roving. Roving has been combed to be fairly fine and smooth so it might be sliding over the soap rather than grabbing onto itself if that makes sense.

Hello! I looked on your site for a 'comment' area appropriate for this question and couldn't find one. I made my first attempt at felted soap and it failed pitifully! I worked on it for about 45 minutes and the wool barely sticks together. Hmm. I'm using dyed roving and Ivory soap (not my first choice in soap, let me tell you) I have some organic clean, undyed carded wool kicking around - I'll give that a try. The wool will continue to felt more firmly with use and the soap will dwindle and disappear leaving you with a little felted wool bundle that has a hallow core. You can carefully slice it open to make a coin purse, or cut off the top and add a strap to make a necklace pouch or holder of some kind.

Please free to use the gnashing teeth description. Regarding clean fleece, someone gave me some very old merio, about ten years old. I washed the fleece, it still did not really feel nice so last week I decided to use it as mulch for the garden and spread it on some weeds, but forgot to cover it with tree mulch. I have half an acre with the house. This week we have had quite some heavy rain which had completed the washing process. The rain had turned the fleece soft and pure white.

I just discovered your videos by accident. Great, just one question. Why were you not aroung forty years ago when I first started to spin. I had to teach myself, both to use the carders and the spinning wheel. Back then it was 'spinning in the grease' only wooses wash the fleece first. The end product was more akin to something they use to moor the QU11. Great to hear no gnashing of the teeth when you card. I have visited other carding sites and there is a loud, loud gnashing of teeth sound

Hi, I never use greasy wool, I always wash it first, greasy wool is nearly always dirty too and will make a mess of your carders which cannot be washed. Wash the wool first if not already done then card when dry, if the wool is very dried out with old age you can put a little olive oil on your hands and just draw the locks through your hand but is rarely needed. Old greasy wool will be very sticky too and carding will just compact the fibres together.

When you put the locks of wool onto the carder, don't feel you have to pull them onto the teeth, just lay them on, then with a very light movement pass the carder over the locks. The carder teeth shouldn't jam together. use only about 2/3rd of the carder furthest from the handle and make sure that you separate the fibres before making another sweep. If the teeth are closely paired see if there are verticle or diagonal space lines between, I find verticle lines are better than diagonal.

Take off any brittle tips and short cuts prior to carding and if blending fibres card each one seperately first then, blend by proportion, you may have to do 2/3 passes, it helps if you do not think of it as a quicker way to card, just a different way. Good luck.

The main thing is to get the carding cloth fineness for the type of wool you will be most using it for. There is no point in getting a fine tooth cloth and then be carding mainly things like Southdown or Border Leicester. There are so many makes on the market, I have a Hedgehog which so far I have used mainly for colour blending of already prepared fibres and for coarse fleece like Texel and Border Leicester.

I see some pretty poor carding when visiting shows etc and would love to dive in and straighten out technique, but it is a dodgy thing to do. Some people would hate me for it, others appreciate. Best to let people decide to come for lessons. The proof is in the finished yarns, good carding, better chance of good yarns. I would love to do a tour in USA and visit many fibre fairs. Glad you all like the vid's I am very busy at the moment spinning cashmere, merino, alpaca and Yak down. Making hats like a crazy person and hoping to get some socks done before xmas. We have a few fibre fairs here, but not many compared with U.S Last one I went to was Wool fest in Cockermouth where I bought a lovely Merino cross fleece which I am spinning at the moment.

I saved that as well, I had gone yesterday to the Dutchess County Sheep & Wool festival in Rhinebeck NY, and I had the most amamzing day seeing all the mouth watering yarns,fleeces, and of course the beautiful sheep, llamas and alpacas, and seeing all the glorious multicolored fall leaves! Wow- you have the best video on carding! I just bought my first set of Strauch curved carders, along with 8oz of Coopworth washed mixed colored fleece, and 1lb of dark brown & grey mixed Llama fleece {so soft!}, and I'm sitting here looking for a video to card, and yours is the best, especialy explaining about what to do with the dried tips. A second thought on this, if your rolags are too big and keep falling apart, take a thick knitting needle and dampen it, place along the edge of the batt and roll the needle over the batt, it should pick up the fibre and make a much tighter rolag called a puni, as done with cotton! It is much easier to handle than a loose Angora rolag. A really fat metal or plastic needle works best. Regards Sue

Traditionally the wool is rolled so that each individual fibre is rolled into an overlapping circle as in the video, however there is nothing to stop you placing the batt on your knee with the long edge along the length of your thigh and then rolling it away from you. this way the fibres are more in alignment and can be spun using short draw but giving more of a semi worsted yarn, not so hairy. sue

See round about 48 seconds into the video. after connecting these rows of teeth, the next important bit is to keep the angle of the carders slightly open so that the teeth are not connecting over the who cloth face, but are definitely connected from the toe of the top carder all the way over the bottom carder from heel to toe. Hi Dora, It sounds as though you may not be catching the wool in the carder you are transferring to properly. When about to transfer, catch the toe of the carder you want to clear face up onto the heel end of the carder you want to put it onto, again face up. make sure the whispy ends of wool on the top carder are not caught under neath then really connect the first few rows of teeth. at this point the top carder will be wood upermost and almost covering the bottom carder handle.

Hi Sue, I'm sitting here, carding my fleece, and I have no problem brushing it, but when it comes to rolling the fiber from one pad to another- I can't do it- lol! Half of it rolls off midway, and that's it, I have to end up pulling it off with my hand, I guess that's what I get for doing this at 3:40am, that and still being wiped out from the festival yesterday! {see my post in Pt.1}, but I guess it will come with practice, can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? Hi Haley, I think it depends on how matted or not the hair is on how you would prep it, if it is fairly open I would tend to card it and take out guard hairs first, maybe blend with a little mohair or silk as it would strengthen without detracting, also the shrinkage rate would not be too different, if you blend with merino and then wash it you could find the merino shrinks more leaving you with a bit of boucle effect (which may be happy accident)

Personally I would do it by hand, if you have lots of it, try some in a stocking in the washer, Separate the locks and lay in stocking all facing same way up, then knot the stocking tightly each end of the staples this way it keeps them from moving around too much. Worth a try, depends on your washer if it draws cold water then hot which is not so good, less agitation is good, but you need really hot water to clean wax out properly.

If fleece is going to felt it will do so most at the butt or cut end, so the smaller the bunches the less likely it is. If you take a large chunk of fleece and wash it like that it is more likely to felt together and if washed loose in a washer and not contained in a net bag you are more likely to lose staple formation which makes combing harder. I have tried many ways to cut down on the time for washing, most end up with more wasteage.

Hi emma, When you say Buggy, do you mean live or dead wildlife as in moth etc, if so I recommend you bag the fleece seal and deep freeze for a few days, this will kill larvae and adults. If it is vegetation and the fleece is long enough to allow and it is confined to the tips, you could cut the tips off, Ausie fleece is often dry and brittle at the tips anyway and would come off in the combing. What is muster?

HI Emma, I would say if you are combing merino, and if it is well washed you will probably get some static problems, I use a very fine spray mister and spray the air above the fleece, if it is too wet it will stretch the wool and it will lose it's elasticity, some folks use water and oil mix, this is fine if you are planning to wash the yarn after spinning,

Sue, Your combing video made it so easy to work with the wool that I have already spun half of the amount that I had. I am now going to comb the second half and will find myself out of wool to comb and spin in a day's time. I am still working on getting the twist just right, but have only spun three pieces on a hand spindle, each is longer than 30 yards. so glad you have found combing easier, I use mine such a lot with washed fleece, I use mainly merino crosses so they are ideal for it. I am carding blue/red/green/purple merino tops with silk so that the singles yarn knits into stripes for a shrug. Plan A is in my head and so far is working, just hope I don't have to resort to plans B,C,D etc!

Sue, I tried my combs this morning and it was a breeze. I was able to make a rove off of it that was a much longer rove than I had been able to do before. Sorry, I ment the pulling of the wool off of the comb without using a ditz. I am working with the wool in a small amount to see if I want to work with it, and do not want to put too much into it. Thank you so much for this. One view and I finally got it. Actually, I think was the commentary that helped the most. I particularly like that you show how to draw the wool off without a diz (I can never find the damn thing), and I realize now that I don't have to comb until the wool is perfect, because I can stop drawing when I reach the nubby bits.

I normally choose combing for wool which has well defined locks, where the locks are longer than the carders are wide and for these mini combs not too long and cotted(matted). They are ideal for merino and merino cross fleece but not really suitable for things like Leicester long wool or Wensleydale.The great thing about combing is it takes off any brittle tips, second cuts etc and so reduces pilling. A small tip which may not be useful, but using more than 2 points to make it straight has the tendency to ruin a straight line, I know this from making a lot of models in my Architecture class. Two points and 1 long object to to span those two points is the best way from my own experience.

But if a person in afrika has an object and turns it into art and is able to sell this, then he or she may have some food on the end of the day. Its survival for them. this guy hasn't got a clue. melt the aluminum, turn the cardboard and banknotes into paper pulp, and do the same thing with the yak wool you do with sheeps wool -- wash it and clean it and turn it into yarn. the whole point of recycling isnt to turn a box into a chair or a pop can into a trinket, its to re use what has already been processed so that you can bypass the step of processing so that you don't need to keep cutting down trees for cardboard or perpetually mine for aluminum ore.

No idea! I'd like to do some tests on the mechanical properties of the fibres and thermal tests too. Although it's a waste material, I think it's too good quality to use for insulating houses. Also there could be problems with moths eating the fleece with time. Much better to use it for clothing, where the thermal properties are just as important.

Yaks are great animals. There is a fairly large experimental herd here in NW Montana. The meat is very tasty and the wool, although difficult to harvest, is very soft and water resistant. The yaks can also be tamed (if you start very early) and will follow you around like dogs, but then of course they are difficult to eat...

@DarcMac I had to go through 5 army blankets to find one that didn't have hoes in them. The first wash was dark grey. Maybe the government washed them and it got dirty in the store, but the quality of the used equipment were terrible.

@solobackpacking Surplus stores purchase surplus gear from DOD's DRMS office. By federal law, DMRS must clean used equipment of all types to avoid spreading around foreign nasties. Stores also purchase new items from the same outlets that supply the military. If your outlet has dirty, damaged equipment, that means that the store owner stores it in a filthy place and you should find a new surplus store. I've shopped all over the USA and as a rule, they are as clean as any retail clothing store.

@wall2rockclimber Maybe Brit ponchos are less rugged than ours? American Army issue ponchos are made of a ripstop nylon material. Though they may be lightweight, I have never torn mine, even in the roughest combat zones, thorns and all. In fact, I have seen more damage from the sun and bullets than rocks and thorns! LOL I still like your vids. Keep up the good work!

my blankets are 100% im pretty sure, but my confederate uniform is 100% wool from woolrich. either way both blankets and my uniform were rough and scratchy when new and through a little washing and use they softened up. after years of use i havent seen any bad effects from washing them occasionaly.

wash them. wool is supposed to be dry cleaned but a military blanket isnt gunna get hurt in the washer and dryer. i wash my wool uniform jacket and pants and all my wool blankets when they get too dirty. it tends to soften up the really scratchy blankets too.

Will make one with a hood on. Sleeves: when arm down, to cover fist form. Option with rolling sleeve up+button to shorten it up when warm or busy hands. Attach a hard leather piece on back (to sit on). Front "skirt" can be double longer with "V" on both sides, and whole jacket should be overlaping style like suite. @bshupejr Late reaction, but in your case I would go for a batch heater in an isolated box painted black from the inside, and adding some mirrors at the outside for more sunlight exposure to the tank. The tempered glass on top retains the heat during the sunny and less sunny parts of the day. Fresnell lenses are good for direct and powerful heating with full sun; see their video about solar cooking, Denise bakes an ommelette there and has some problems with clouds. Regards from Mexico

It sure seems like large scale water heating for something like steam power generation or heating a dwelling would be extreemly difficult to accomplish this way given the localization of the hear source and needing to reposition with sun movement. However, using this as a method to heat a surface for cooking seems like it would be a slam dunk. BBQ (as previously mentioned) or even a large griddle surface etc. Thanks for the video!
