i figured it out!, when he spread the deck out the first time, the blue card, THE 5 OF SPADES, is consealed in the not so spread section, then he turns two cards when showing the 8 of diamonds, making it lookk to have a blue back, when in actuall face it is the secone, the one behind it, then he dropps it back in the pile, and lifts onlu the blue card (5 of diamonds) and puts it down, then brings out another red 5 of diamonds and puts it back in thedeck as a decoy

Yes I think glad2teach has a point. When I multiply the traditional way I am not really thinking it is just a pattern I follow. Now the trick in this video you have to remember your multiplication tables and think about the hundreds, thousands and such. For someone like me who finds math very challenging this math trick did make me think more on squares and not just follow a pattern. :)

Using EasyCal approach, you would think for a moment the nearest friendly number ( that is called a Base ) you can use to your easily ( read: mentally ) square the given number . Then in one or two steps you would calculate the answer. So you do develop creative Mathematical thinking of calculating the answer with minimum effort. In the video above like I had explained how to use Base 100, similarly watch the 2nd video on glad2teach website to see how easy it is to use Base 50 .

To calculate the square of a number (exponent 2) the usual way, you put one no. below the other no. and start multiplying each single digit from right to left till we are done and then add all the columns to get to the answer. We are not thinking , we are just repeating the same pattern mechanically. Thus do not develop Mathematical insight.

Indeed whatever works for you is the best method. This is the reason why I love learning and teaching Mathematics so much. It is such a flexible subject. Just to add here for the benefit of all of us. In the EasyCal technique explained above it makes no difference at? all if you find 17 x 14 Or 14 x 17 . As 17 + 4 is 21 and 14 + 7 is also 21 . Whichever way you do it answer will be same. This is known as Commutative Property of numbers which all techniques have to obey.

your method is good too. but i just can't remember the figures like that. i'm the one the people around me ask for multiplication or division or subtraction or addition, arithmatic bascially. i can do it my way, but if you were to ask me to do it this way, i'd have to rememebr which digit was 1st and 2nd and stuff, and i simply would not be able to do it. but everyone uses different methods. cheers! ps. do you use an interactive white board or somthing?

You are right. The secret to being fast with calculation is to break it in smaller parts. In the EasyCal trick explained above, I have done the same thing. Your ques : 17 x 14 = ? Add 17 + 4 = 21_ or 210 ( Tip: putting a 0 is easier to visualize than putting a blank ) For that matter 14 + 7 is also 21_ ( so you cannot go wrong with this technique ) Now simply multiply 7 and 4 and add it to 210 . So answer is 238 . In just 2 simple steps we multiplied 17 x 14

or you could just multiply by 10 and then multiply by the one digit. like this: 17 times 14 17 times 10 is 170 17 times 4 is 68 170 plus 68 is 238 it's a bit slower, but requires less visualizing. with this, you have to visualize the first 2 digits of the result, and then the last two digits of the 2 numbers you're multiplying. dunno, i find this way harder, but everyone's different.

Dear jeepsfill, the EasyCal technique I have explained in the video above will work both ways ( 12 times 17 or 17 times 12 ). This is not surprising as all multiplication techniques have to obey "Commutative Property ". It states that when two numbers are multiplied together, the product is the same regardless of the order of the multiplicands Tip: Call me lazy or smart I still prefer to add to 2 to17 and not 7 + 12 . Both will give 19 though. Mathematics is indeed so flexible.

haha i saw the video they made with the gorilla in my biopsych class!! this was really awesome though, i enjoyed it a lot. i didn't notice ANY of the changes. i must have issues with attention because when i watched the gorilla video i didn't see him walk in the middle of a ball game and do a dance either. and i was watching the people in black, which made me among the more likely to see him!

he hits the ball on the very top. if u want the ball to curve into a left pocket you would hit the cue ball at the very top slightly on the left hand side. works for me all the time. it pushes the ball forward and because of so much reverse spin it come back curving going around other balls. hard to explain but i do it easy, been playing since i was about 5
