Thanks so much for this video I just got a 1 yr old rescue, he is a longhaired dachshund, He has been in a kennel 10 hours a day for the last 6 months so my problem is I live in a townhome and the only place for him to potty is the rock beds on the side of the sidewalk my 8 yr old dachshund goes there just fine, now I have to teach Koda to do the same thing, and he will sniff around forever and not go, and when he does its hard for me to tell because he doesnt lift his leg LOL wish me luck

@3333alex What do you mean? Of course you can take your dog outside even if it haven't received all it's vaccination shots, just be careful about approaching strangers with dogs ( I assume it's a puppy you are referring too) since you don't know if those dogs might be carrier of something and/or aren't vaccinated. I started socializing my pup as soon as I got him, but I was extra careful with not letting strangers pet him until he had his last vaccination shot.

@3333alex People say not to have your dog on the dirt because of parvo but really they can walk on the dirt if its all you have, Our puppy went on the dirt and still does. She is 14 weeks and has been going on the dirt since 8 weeks, She is healthy. Maybe just wash off the dogs paws if your worried they are going to lick the tiny amount of dirt off there paws.

My friends have 2 dogs, one of them is a greyhound could Atticus, and he is very calm, and never jumps up. (Probably because he's to big) he has retired from racing, of course, because he is 7. He could have a little training, but not the jumping up training, training like sit. But the other dog is a staffy cross and is quite small, and is mad!! Useful tip! What I did in the past was lightly stepping on dog's rear paws. The only thing I achieved was he bacame a master in avoiding his paws being stepped on :) "Aft paws method" is much better.

I now have a 4 year old yellow lab that my daughter and son-in-law caused so many problems that they gave her to me . Most of the issues except two very annoying habits I've had success in fixing and with this video advice on jumping, she is a lot more sociable to be around. The last problem is slow,she crotch sniffs which we call dolphin poking, everyone she meets. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks again for the easy and quick jumping solution.

I found, this too late, i had been doing the pulling and tugging method. Although when started this he kinda had the jist of what was happening. then he would start to pull away. After awhile i even started to run, its such a good feeling having your dog running beside you looking up at you ( can only imagine what he's thinking) Thanx very much for this i feel we still have a long way togo. Oh my gosh! This worked for my 7mo old GSD puppy. We are only on day two of trying this and she is totally getting it! @lyricjam Might not work with all dogs, but has nothing to do with the dog's size and it doesn't mean that the alternative is jerking your dog around as there are other positive methods that might better suit your dog if this one doesn't. @Nitah89 The idea is not that the loose leash WILL lead to a correction, it is that anytime the dog walks ahead and can't see the handler, it has no idea what potential action the handler can take. While a competition-type heel (similar to what Sam does) is going to be impractical for long walks, the main idea is for the dog to follow the person. Make sure you do not talk to the dog while you are working on this. Dogs get excited when you talk and will confuse them. Keep your head high and relaxed and give firm but fair corrections. One of the doggies got a really bad cough immediately after hitting the end hard. I took him to the vet, who gave him hydrocodone. He coughed and was afraid of the leash for a week (the dog, not the vet). Glad to say, he got over it, and I got over "correction" as a training method. Dogs bark because they have something to say. Mine bark when they need to go outside to relieve themselves. That is far superior to the alternative. Telling the dog "No!" is a lousy idea. Either it will be interpreted as a threat or it will think you are barking with the dog. You cannot deal with undesired barking without understanding what the dog is trying to say. The way to keep a dog from barking to go outside for non-pressing reasons is to make the inside a happy, interesting place.

Hello, Is it really so big of a problem if the dog barks? I mean it's theire nature to bark at many reasons. Example 1) Some animal/human stepped into theire territorium. 2) stress/aggresive/feeling alone. I mean it's not of a big deal to have my dog bark whenever it feels like it, of course i go check everytime he barks (usually) to see whats the problem. Dogs are packt? Instead of thinking what YOU think your dog SHOULD want think about what you can do to actually help your dog LEARN to do something DIFFERENT for the thing HE WANTS. super video showing desensitization. It's also great to hear the explanation of "over threshold" while showing what that means. When you can control the stimulus this kind of training is quite easy and relatively quick as long as you watch for this exact thing. It a great example of how this works for so manner reactive causes. So much more effective than yelling, rolling, leash popping, all the rest of old methods, that suppress behaviors instead of actually changing the root emotion involved.

Those are some wonderful tips for not barking. But how would I teach my dog (maltese) which goes on bike rides with me (He is tethered to my bike with a bike leash) and he always barks at people walking by or when he encounters other dogs that are walking. I'm a pretty successful retriever trainer, so I must be doing something right. NOBODY worth a heck uses a e-collar to teach the heel command. I use a collar and a 6 foot leash to teach heel and there's no e-collar pressure or any other kind of pressure, but there's no food reward either. At the end of the training session the retrievers get to retrieve a bumper or a duck dummy...that's the reward.

No disrespect intended but you really, really don't know what you're talking about. Behavior is all about consequences. You go to work every week because you get a paycheck. When you're training your retrievers you are applying some type of consequence. The dog is either working to get something (treat) or working to avoid something (stimulation from an electronic collar). It's that simple.

Question: I have two lab mixes, about 45lb each. When I'm walking them, they walk next to me no problem. tails level. However,w hen they hear another dog bark, we pass a dog barking at a fence or, encounter an off lead dog that barks at them, my male's tail goes straight up and starts to tug roughly, the female follows his lead in pulling but tail is low. I really enjoy watching all of these videos! I find them comprehensive, enlightening and easy to apply to my relationship with my own GSD. My maltipoo barks like crazy when my kids bring in new friends and will bark just when she hears someone come in the door before she even knows who it is--a family member or a "stranger" (to her).

@Civicblabla You can also use a sound or say "Good".. But it will be easier with a clicker as the sound must come exactly as the wanted behavior happens. It's such a short and concrete sound, and will sound the same every time..

Great video! I have a problem with my 7 months old golden. He has suddenly found out that he doesn't wan't to go indoors when we have been on a walk. (Longer walks when he gets tired are fine, but sometimes he's just going to pee ..). Since he doesn't want to go indoors again he starts biting his leach, lay down on his back and/or wraps the leach around his paws. I?ve tried treats, a toy, ignoring him aso, nothing works. I am getting my first puppy in a couple of weeks and I am so pleased to have found the Kikopup chanel. The lessons are so clear and really in tune with the dog, why would anyone not give this a try? Hi Emily, People on a private forum I am on are questioning what to do in a multi dog household, some use the dogs name, which I have already posted is incorrect. I teach this the same way you do, but ibn a multi dog household would you use a different noise for each dog, or just ignore the dog that wasn't doing anything wrong, or treat/play with all of them. I didn't know about this method, so recently I've started playing chasing game with my golden retriever. I whistle and start running away. But it doesn't work perfectly, because not always he wants to run after me. Now I think he would do it better if I had something reinforcing with me (besides the game itself). Also during a walk when he runs forward, I stop and wait for him to return. Actually it seems to me that my dog thinks that I'm some crazy pup, that needs his attention and escort.

Thanks so much! I was taught to use a 'uh uh' noise to tell them something was wrong, but I would like to switch to all positive training, since I get so much better results when the dogs are having fun - the 'uh uh' noise is kind of a downer! So I am going to start working on this method instead.

She is very smart with tricks, attention, gentle, and guards the house; but still doesn't learn when to stop when she plays rough (starts biting hard my hands), or to stop scratching the window when we arrive home (or a familiar) even if I tell her several times to stop with my "no" "calm down" "easy". nice dogs but their not trained well. they wont let go, they turn on their owners, and have to be muzzled. north american police had to go over their get rid off all their dogs and teach them how to train police dogs properly.

Fabletv a trick is a behavior. Sitting is a behavior, etc. The only thing I would add to this video is allowing the dog to be trained by targeting, offering behaviors on it's own, or shaping the behavior. This way you don't need to fade your food lure.

Really its just that some breeds take longer to train. Bulldogs have competed in ACK competitions.. heeling, sit, stay and even retrieving dun bells with the owners scent on them. Yes, they can be lethargic and are not as active as most dogs but they can still be trained..even high levels that are necessary for ACK competitions

Bite work is first taught in prey drive, but later, as the dog matures, defense drive needs to be added as well. I think that this is excellent training video, and especially with dogs doing obedience while another dog is doing bite work, shows the level of distraction being taken by the obedience dogs, and these dogs are being "proofed" to ignore all things. I still question the logic of the helper petting the dog after the "out" command is given and the bite work is finished.

@alexnds1 it teaches them to have a calm bite and good grip, not a nervous chewing bite with poor grip. When the dogs go out into the world, and they actually get a real bite, they hold on with good firm grip until told to out.

I work with two protection trained GSDs and our company also has Belgian Mals which ive worked with, yes they are faster and more agile, but also very nervous in some cases, but otherwise, the two breeds are the same. Both highly intelligent, willing, strong dogs, well suited to the job. But my personal opinion, having worked with both, shepherds are definately better.

@alexnds1 The 'Training' taking place with the dog is teaching him to differentiate when the handler makes the call of when to bite and when not to. Not all bad guys jump up and down, as some are passive. It's a big liability if you have a dog that just goes on 'motion' or when the dog deems it right. The picture is the same, but I am telling the handler when the dog is to bite or not to.

it's silly to teach a dog that bits the helper to then get petted by the helper. The helper is not a "Friend" of the dog, but represents what in real life would be a criminal. These dogs bite in prey drive, for the prey object. What dog would be petted by a criminal? The defense drive is developed when dog believes the helper can hurt the dog good initial training in prey drive but why pet them?.
